Simmer Fine Wine & Spirits is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Salé to the position of Alberta Marketing Manager.

Jamie, based in Edmonton, is a national and world figure skating champion. As if this isn't impressive enough, Jamie went on to win a gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. She has been touring the world as a professional skater for over ten years, but now tries to stay in North America as much as possible so she can be an amazing mom to her young son, and an amazing Marketing Manager for Simmer Fine Wine & Spirits!

She is both a public speaker and Brand Ambassador for Peekaboo Beans and Canada Goose, and still manages to make time for her philanthropic work, sitting on the board of directors for Special Olympics Alberta, and working with a number of other charities including the Zebra Foundation. Passionate about wine, Jamie is ready to now take on the world of tastings and pairings. As she continues to attend seminars, workshops, and tastings, her friendly demeanor and sociable attitude make her an amazing connection for our clients, and a vital part of our team.

Plus #16 & #90!

“I estimate I taste around 2200 wines in a year (give or take), and although not all of them are reviewed on my websites, they all contribute to my overall view of value and quality.
Of course to whittle down the nearly 1000 which I do review in-depth for my annual TOP 100 +11 is a challenge, but one I enjoy.

Many of the wines I review will not qualify for my TOP 100 list because they are above $20 - the best of those over $20 will come in a separate list - my annual TOP 50 $20-$50, or perhaps show up in my Gift Giving Guide.

After all the retracing of my steps, the filtering through of the wines I have tasted over the past year which are $20 and under and have received a score of 89 points or more on my sister site WineScores.ca, this is what I have come up with, a well-rounded list of white, red and pink, sparkling and still wines from: Argentina, Australia, British Columbia, California, Chile, France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain... Enjoy WineDiva's Top 100+11 of 2011!”

Cheers, WineDiva

Award winning Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône

We are pleased to announce that we now represent domaines Font de Michelle and Font du Vent from France.

Two generations of winemakers gathered around the same passion. The respect for an exceptional terroir and the elaboration of elegant and powerful wines of estate domains Font de Michelle and Font du Vent

According to local archives, the Gonnet family has been in Bédarrides since 1600. In 1880 Jean Etienne Gonnet built the farmhouse that serves as the headquarters of the estate today.

His grandson, Etienne Gonnet, created Font de Michelle in 1950. This 30 hectare vineyard is magnificently situated in the southeast of the Châteauneuf du Pape AOC. The mayor of town of Bédarrides from 1952 until 1964, Etienne Gonnet was an example of perseverance and rigour in his day.

Since 1975 his sons, Jean and Michel, have kept watch over the destiny of the estate. For over 30 years their concern has been to improve on wine making methods, to develop full-bodied wines that are concentrated, refined and through which the ‘terroir’ can express all of its qualities and thus, in so doing, elevate the estate’s renown to its highest level. Today, their respective sons, Bertrand and Guillaume, bestow their enthusiasm and skill, in turn.

In 2002 the estate expanded with a magnificent 20 hectare Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Signargues property situated at Domazan in the Gard - La Font du Vent.

We are pleased to announce that we now represent Hillside Estate Winery in Alberta.

Hillside Estate Winery has been quietly going about its business of creating world class wines made from 100% Okanagan grapes for over a quarter of a century.

Located on the famous Naramata Bench in the heart of the Okanagan Valley in Southern British Columbia, the area is renowned for its unique terroir. All of the vineyards are located on the south west facing slope above Lake Okanagan and are planted in a mixture of well drained glacial and lacustrine soils. Hillside controls over 16 Hectares (40 acres) of vineyards, all of which are contiguous to the winery. Today the winery is recognized as an industry leader in the development of varietal clones with concentrated fruit flavour. Grapes grown on the Estate consist of; Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Merlot and Syrah.

The well-equipped operation, under the direction of proprietor Bill Carpenter and winemaker Kathy Malone, produces top quality Okanagan Valley wines destined for many markets recognizing their attention to quality and detail. This commitment has been awarded numerous times throughout North America and is best demonstrated by being awarded “Best Winery in the South Okanagan” for 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 as well as hundreds of awards over the past 25 years. Familia Cassone 2007 Obra Prima Reserva Malbec

90 Points – (Michael Schachner, March 2011)  “Almost everything about this wine is right on the money, from bouquet and flavours to feel and price. The nose is sweet and floral, with deep, alluring berry aromas. The palate offers a fine texture, with pure, layered blackberry, cola and spice flavours. Satisfying on the finish and complete.”
